Meditations to try

Go to Oprah.com's "Meditations for Rejuvenating your Body"and view six audio meditations to try by Thich Nhat Hanh and Jon Kabat-Zin.

I'm currently reading Kabat-Zin's book "Where ever you go, there you are." If you're at all intrigued by meditation, I think it's a wonderful resource that is simple and easy to read.

Make a joyful noise

The purpose of my blog is to show how to be joyful in your everyday life. I just read an article on Oprah's site called "Awakening Joy" that has awesome ideas that are so simple to do yet so powerful and effective.

One of my favorite suggestions in the article is to sing. Sing in your car, the shower, WHEREVER. Just make a joyful noise (isn't that in the Bible?). You don't have to join the church choir to sing. Just SING whenever you get the chance, and your mind and body will thank you!

When I do sing, I take it a step further and sing happy songs. I even made a CD of happy songs I already had available to me.

Here's my HAPPY playlist:
  • All I wanna do - Sheryl Crow
  • Light in your eyes -" "
  • Good day sunshine - The Beatles
  • Walking on sunshine - Katrina & the Waves
  • Shiny happy people - REM
  • Beautiful day - U2
  • High Tide Low Tide - Bob Marley
  • Fidelity - Regina Spektor
  • Groove is in the Heart - Deee-lite
  • Smile - Madeleine Peyroux
What are some of your happy songs?

I was reviewing life since Brijin Joy arrived - check out tag "Brijin Joy." It's cool to reminisce - we've had quite an adventure since our little peanut joined our team, and we've been loving every minute of it.

One of the comments on a particular post, "Happiness is the seed we Sow" received this comment below, which was a great reminder to hang in there and focus on the good. Happiness is truly a seed we sow. We have to tend to the good in our lives to watch it multiply. It's just a law of the universe. Take advantage of it and enjoy the life of your dreams. And of course the quality of what you plant day in and day out - are you a half empty or full - makes the BIG difference with the quality of your life.

I watched Oprah's Spirituality 101 episode that aired on Wednesday, Jan. 7 from my DVR this morning. The first guest via Skype was totally focused on everything wrong in her life. No matter what Oprah and her spirituality trio said about focusing on what was going right, she wouldn't budge and rolled her eyes. Oprah caught the eye roll and called her out. "Let's start with this. You are thankful today for your breath. Thank you God for my breath." Beautifully said; think Oprah may need to attribute that to Louise L. Hay.

Comment:

"When we invest in good things, we will get our money back with interest. But there is always a pause between the sowing of the seed, and the harvest. So don’t get weary, don’t become discouraged, and don’t give up. Endurance is the key to so many things in life. And remember that in the natural world, everything produces after its own kind. You plant a peach seed, you get a peach. You plant an apple seed, you get an apple. The same is true in the spiritual realm. You have to plant what you want to receive. You can’t plant anger, and get peace. You can’t plant bitterness, and get sweetness. So if you’re not happy with the crop that is coming up in your life, evaluate the seed you are planting, and make some changes for the better."Happiness held is the seed; happiness shared is the flower".---------------Gillberk

Thank you Thursday

"The thankful receiver bears a plentiful harvest."
~ William Blake

Gratitude is the key to prosperity and abundance so I dedicate every Thursday to what I'm grateful for this week. I'm thankful for:

  • Hubby figuring out how to program the garage door openers so we may park in the garage - yippee!
  • Baby's head being down and in the right position for labor.
  • A WONDERFUL baby shower with family and friends this past weekend who were more generous than I deserve. I feel so loved and blessed.
  • My friend Vicki for giving me Nag Champa incense to try.
  • My dad telling me I'm a good writer (probably for the millionth time but I always enjoy hearing it from such a talented writer)!
  • Hubby burning me the Tavis Smiley / Louise Hay interview on CD for me, which was a nice surprise.
  • Oprah and Eckhart Tolle's online classes, especially this week's episode about the pain body - check out "A New Earth" if you haven't already. It will change your life.
  • My yoga students reading my blog! Make sure to "comment" so I know you stopped by!
  • Having friends who love food just as much as me (That's you Maria!).
  • Tomorrow being Friday and having Royals tickets for me and the hub to enjoy.
  • The weekend being empty and open to vegging.
  • I have to add one more - when I arrived home last night I received the curtains for the babies room from my sister-in-law in Virginia. I put them right up - they look soooooooo cute!
Make sure to give thanks today and every day - it will pay in dividends!

Yoga awakens your purpose

As I posted the other day, I'm reading "A New Earth: Awakening to your life's Purpose" by Eckhart Tolle. I'm about halfway through the book - every time I open it, I am more impressed and in awe of what I'm learning. Thank you so much Oprah for opening the world's eyes to this powerful novel.

On page 159 in chapter five, I found this statement:

"Spiritual practices that involve the physical body, such as t'ai chi, qigong, and yoga are also increasingly being embraced in the Western world. These practices do not create a separation between body and spirit and are helpful in weakening the pain-body. They will play an important role in the global awakening."

Not that I need validation in writing for myself because I've experienced the power of yoga firsthand: it helped me out of depression, out of chronic pain and back into living. However, it feels so wonderful to see this statement in such a widely read book - over 700,000 people world wide participated in Oprah's first online class on March 3 to discuss the book with Oprah and its author. If you haven't heard about this huge opportunity, go to www.oprah.com to learn more.

When people ask me why I practice, I say this:

"Practicing yoga is my daily prescription for living my best life."

If you have a full medicine cabinet or just need a new direction in your life, I highly suggest trying yoga. It may not resonate the first time you do it or even the tenth, and you don't have to invest a whole hour or 90 minutes. Just try five or 10 minutes. It's more about quantity versus quality; the more frequently you do it, the more you will feel and see its affects on you mentally, spiritually and physically. Trust me, I wasn't a believer myself when I first tried it out, but when I truly needed it, it was and is my salvation.

If you've never tried yoga before and are looking for a place to begin, try Hillary's Podcast #54 - Shift Your Attitude - All Level Yoga Practice - 15 Min Chair Yoga Check In. She has photos and a podcast (it's located at the end of the above page, but here's the direct link as well) to guide you through a practice you can do completely in your chair - how cool is that!

A New Earth

Along with the rest of the world, I'm reading "A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose" to take Oprah's online course with author Eckhart Tolle exploring its meaning. The hubby and I tried to watch the first live webcast this Monday, but due to so many viewers (over 500,000!), our Internet connection kept stalling. It didn't surprise me since I work closely with the webcast group in my corporate day job and know the technology can get overloaded with far fewer numbers. I still give credit to Oprah for being a pioneer and for being smart by offering a web and audio replay (I still need to watch the rest of Monday's!).

A few friends at work are also reading the book; one of them said it wasn't clicking with her. A few years ago, I tried to read Tolle's first book "The Power of Now," but it didn't resonate with me and I quit it after a few chapters. At the time, I was practicing the physical postures of yoga but wasn't really into the spiritual side of it yet. Now my practice has deepened where I've begun to study Patanjali's Yoga Sutras and other spiritual yogic texts. After only reading the first two chapters of "A New Earth," I already see a lot of similarities between the novel and yoga. In fact, I just read a blog post expressing the same parallel on The Everything Yoga Blog.

Take advantage of the opportunity to read "A New Earth" while benefiting from the input of the author and Oprah for 10 weeks. Tell me if you're reading it too and how it's going for you.

Wanna know my secret?

Two sick days away from my corporate-day job, I ventured into work today through what appeared to be Siberia. Local school districts even called off school today due to the fierce snow.

By 11 a.m. I was exhausted. Who knew sitting in a chair was so much work, but my body wasn't used to being vertical since I've been down and out with the flu for four days. Luckily I found a sub for my yoga class tonight because I had no energy by 5 p.m. - thank you Anita for your help. I hope my yoga students will forgive me for being absent all week!

When I returned home this evening, I vegged out on the couch with my still-sick hubby. Our TiVo reminded me I had it record Oprah today to watch Louise Hay talk about the law of attraction and the secret behind The Secret. I was so excited to watch it - apparently Louise had been on Oprah 20 years ago to promote her book You can heal you Life, which is really auspicious considering she just released her movie with the same title. (Watch the preview of it below.)

Prompted by a Hay House e-mail, I wrote an e-mail to Oprah last week about how Louise's affirmations have changed my life for the better. I really believed I was going to be on Oprah (no joking!), but alas no call. I blame the flu for ruining my vibration with the flow of attraction! :)
